Interview - Nicolas Buechi/September Wheels

1.Rad and loud greetings from Peru,Nicolas! How going the things there?

Pretty good right now, we are celebrating ten years of September Wheels right now. The Beast DIY spot is growing, the whole DIY scene is growing, so everything is pretty fine.

2.Tell us how you start September Wheels? How were the beginnings?

It started in early 2008. I was going to a skatespot in Winterthur with my friend Kägi, and we talked about doing something by ourselves, to have our own thing, local and skaterowned. I was thinking more and more about the project from that moment on, ordered wheel samples from different companies, tested them, checked out how to print, and in March 2008, I set up my own printing machine on the table in my small room. It was a lot of work, followed by all the promo work, website, etc. But the response was great, people liked the wheels, shops started to order, and after a while, it got too big to print them all by myself. The team was in the beginning close friends, as Sven Moser and Paul Buner. But it grew rapidly. I never thought it would be a real brand, with people knowing it, like you do in Peru. People even got the logo tatooed, which impresses me so much. I just wanted to do something for myself, not for the money, just for the love of skateboarding.

3.September Wheels at the moment have a team?

Right now, there is not a real team anymore. Most of the people that were on the team in the beginning are now also 10 years older. And it was always a kind of friends team. But it is important to know all the people who supported September Wheels all the time as team riders. They promoted it on events, asked the shops for orders, pushed it on social media. I’m so thankful for all this support and their work. THANK YOU!

But the team was Sven Moser, Paul Buner, Damien Morger, Sylvain Morger, Jan Solenthaler, Robin Fischer, Reto Bösch, Ivo Weibel, Lukas Halter, Moritz Greber, Mirco Bitterli, Marco Hofer, Martin Lucuk, Hector Heredia, Alex Treter, Pero Jurkic, Domenic Hänni, Christoph Spiess, Chrigel Strupler and the intern, Theis! Thank you guys.

4.Explain some more about the DIY and Underground Skateboarding scene from your city.

Zurich has a really good and vibrant skate scene. There are many different groups, and they are really active. Like the Aitsch gang, Adi Good is always doing stuff, or the Doraydoe, always pushing out new videos. But also labels like The Straight and Narrow or the Frischholz and the Roll-Laden shop are always working on something, creating little events, movie premieres and this motivates people. Also girl gangs like the Shreddermoez are always skating and motivated. I think there is now a really good vibe in the Zurich skate scene. There are really a a lot of really good street spots, some small parks, The Beast DIY, and the big skatepark Brunau. The level is really high, everyone is really skilled. You see this also in big names as Kilian Zehnder and Sven Kilchenmann. They grew up here, pushing now clips out on Thrasher as Kilian, but still, they come back for mellow sessions in Zurich. I think this says a lot about the friends thing. Or Sven, who is teaching kids at the skatepark. The scene really grows the next generation by themselves.

5.Nicolas apart from September Wheels you have another proyect paralell?

Oh yeah, I always have a lot of different projects going on. I just finished a little bowl in the countryside near Zurich, and now I’m working on another little bowl project in Switzerland. Besides that, I’m still involved with art, photography and filming. And in the winter time, go snowboarding as much as possible. Zurich is really close to the mountains, so it’s good for me. When its cold and snowy, and you can’t go skateboarding anymore, we go snowboarding. I started to build my own snowboards a while ago, and I think my next bigger project will be in this direction.

6.You know the DIY and Underground Skateboarding scene from Southamerica?

Actually, not really much. We never had a distribution in South America, only some people from Brazil were ordering wheels. The only person I know doing stuff is Martin Nuñes from Ludica skate in Mexico City. He really does great stuff, they just released their new video Bananas. But I heard from Sam van Lani, that there will be a new DIY build in Peru this autumn. I know, that the punk and DIY culture is really big in South America, so I think, there must be also a lot of DIY skateprojects, and for sure, many good and motivated people.

7.How and where the maniacs can find the merch from September Wheels?

8.Morbid future plans?

Yeah, always a lot of plans. Build new concrete stuff, go skateboarding as much as possible, drink cold beer with good people. I try to find my own little peace in the world, enjoy skateboarding, snowboarding and the creativity that comes with it. I really would like to travel more, see more special places, meet likeminded people. I hope the Beast DIY stays for some more time, or if not, build something new.

9.Nicolas,thanks for your time in this interview,last words bro!

I really would like to thank all the people in the world, who supported September Wheels. It’s this people, that made it happen, that made it known. With just me, it would be nothing. All these people, riding the wheels, helping building stuff, these are the good people. Skateboarding is always a community thing. That’s the cool thing about it. Entrevista - Victor Trecelunas / Mondaka DIY Skatepark

1.Hey Victor! saludos desde Perú! como va todo por allí tío? como va todo en Mondaka DIY Skatepark?
Hola Diego saludos desde Galicia. Por aquí andamos con los preparativos del Rule FEST IV. Dejando todo preparado para el Campeonato y festival que hacemos cada año aquí en MONDAKA D.I.Y Skatepark. 

2.Cuentanos como se forma e inicia este proyecto de skateboarding DIY llamando Mondaka DIY Skatepark?
Pues Mondaka nace al encontrar un espacio abandonado cerca de Mondariz (Pontevedra). La historia es que en verano camino del rió para bañarme, siempre que veía esa nave abandonada y llena de basura pensaba en un skatepark dentro , así que un día junto a un par de amigos nos decidimos a limpiarlo; una vez limpio les dijimos a los demás y empezamos a construir dentro un espine de madera que poco a poco y con la ayuda de muchas personas fue creciendo hasta convertirse en el paraíso que hoy en día ripamos con ganas y orgullo. 

3.Cuantos miembros tiene a cargo Mondaka DIY Skatepark?
Digamos que ahora somos unas 20 personas dentro del colectivo, cada quien aporta lo suyo. El peso gordo del espacio lo llevamos entre 5 o 6 personas, es decir somos los que más activos estamos dentro del proyecto, pero es un espacio abierto y ojalá cada vez más personas se vengan y tiren del proyecto junto a nosotros.

4.Mondaka DIY Skatepark tiene el apoyo de algun sponsor dentro del underground skateboarding?
Si hemos tenido apoyo de algunas Marcas desde el principio, una de las que más nos a apoyado es DoG Bowl Pool coping, desde el principio y a partir de un gran amigo en común, Jose Noro,nos pusimos en contacto con Rubén y nos donó varias losetas de poolcoping que aun están dando caña 4 años después. Teníamos claro que queríamos una parte de poolcoping y gracias a Rubén y su gran iniciativa de crear losetas de forma artesanal y D.I.Y esto fue posible.
Para el Rule Fest nos apoyan muchas otras marcas ( que salen en el cartel del Festi), desde aquí quiero darles las gracias por su apoyo incondicional y por hacer posible que podamos seguir organizando cosas ya que sin sus aportaciones no tendríamos premios que darle a los guerreros que vienen a dejarse la piel ese día.

5.Como estuvo la expectativa sobre este proyecto entre los DIY e underground patinadores?
Pues creo que Mondaka es un referente del D.I.Y aquí en Galicia, a la gente le encanta. La verdad es que es un lugar precioso en plena naturaleza, con un rió muy bonito para bañase y con diferentes iniciativas como huerta o casas de madera en los arboles para lxs peques, si ademas de eso le sumas un skatepark en el que poder darle cuando quieras, llueva o no( que aquí es habitual) ,un ambiente que te cagas y engorile pues es un plan perfecto.

6.Victor cuentanos un poco sobre el movimiento DIY e underground skateboarding en tu ciudad?
Pues la verdad es que yo vivo a lado de Mondaka y es el bosque no es una cuidad pero de Galicia destacaría el trabajo de la gente de coruña con la Evildedo Ramp, que por desgracia ya no existe porque hace unos días desalojaron el espacio en el que se encontraba y también el trabajo de nuestros vecinos portugueses que también hicieron unos trabajos impresionantes.
Por otro lado hay gente como Javier saavedra que de forma individual hace cosas como el barrier de Montouto en Santiago y siempre están colaborando con la gente que tiene iniciativa.
Desde mi punto de vista falta iniciativa por parte de  mucha gente y siempre somos los abueletes los que estamos tramando cosas, a ver si cada día se anima más gente a construir sus espacios y defenderlos ante las adversidades y no depender de un ayuntamiento o estado que hacen pocas cosas, mal y caras, porque están mas ocupados en robar dinero y sus cosas de personas trajeadas.

7.Conoces algo sobre la escena de skateboarding de Perú?
Pues la verdad es que no conozco casi nada por desgracia, pero me encantaría conocer más de la escena y sus personas y personajes.

8.Mondaka DIY Skatepark tiene merch disponible? camisetas? pegatinas? donde se pueden adquirir?
Pues si solemos hacer cosas para hacer más fácil la Autogestión del espacio, solemos tener camisetas , pegatinas, sudaderas. Escribiendo por Facebook solemos guardas las cosas a quien nos las pide, pero normalmente es gente conocida y de cerca.

9.Que planes futuros se viene en Mondaka DIY Skatepark?
Pues por mi parte intento estar más en el presente, pero supongo que mantener el espacio e ir mejorando cada día cosas, ya que cuando entramos estaba completamente espoliado y reventado además de lleno de basura y restos de coches de un desguace. Seguir haciendo cosas para lxs peques,  mas huerta y ya se irá viendo si hacemos algo más para patinar, a mi me encantaría tener un pump track macarrilla con alguna pala heavy por algún lado, jejejejeje. 
también disfrutar cada día que esté allí.

10.Victor gracias por tu tiempo en esta entrevista,algo que desees agregar?
De nada, gracias a ti por tener este tipo de iniciativas y hacer que sitios como Mondaka se conozcan más por ahí adelante, y que cualquier persona con iniciativa y buena onda es bienvenida para patinar , tomarse unas birras o lo que sea. Animar a las personas que lo  lean a que hagan las cosas por si mismas y no depender nunca de un sistema corrupto y asqueroso; que apoyen a sus marcas locales y no a las grandes multinacionales del skate, que solo aparecen cuando hay pasta de por medio y darle las gracias a todas la personas que de alguna manera hayan colaborado o sigan haciendolo con Mondaka.
